Sir Robin Knox Johnston

"RKJ" has been described by The Sunday Times as Britain's greatest ever yachtsman. He made history in 1969, when, after 312 days at sea, he became the first man ever to sail solo and non stop around the world. In 1993, he completed another first and broke The Jules Verne round the world speed record as co-skipper with Sir Peter Blake of "Enza". This time it took just 74 days.

Last year, thirty-seven years after first sailing into the history books he’s back at sea again, proving that age is no hindrance to a great sailor.

At the age of 67 he took part in what is arguably sports toughest event, the VELUX 5 oceans solo round the world yacht race. Sailing in Saga Insurance, an Open 60 yacht, he challenged the sports very best sailors in the fastest racing yachts on the planet. Only 163 people have ever sailed around the world alone and having been the first, his aim was to take 200 days off his original record.

Not content with his own adventures Robin is the brains behind the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race  the latest edition of which is due to finish in Liverpool in July. Robin wanted to give ordinary people the chance to do something truly extraordinary by becoming ocean racers, previously the preserve of the privileged or professional sailors. The Clipper Race is the only round the world yacht race for non-professional sailors and takes place every two years. The crews compete for the prestigious Clipper Trophy onboard a matched fleet of ocean going racing yachts, each sponsored by cities and regions around the world.
