Robert Powell and actress Liza Goddard (who gave the definitive performance of Elizabeth Bennett in Pride and Prejudice on BBC TV) bring you Jane Austen’s world.

‘For what do we live, but to make sport for our neighbours, and laugh at them in our turn.’ (Pride and Prejudice)

No writer, with the exception of Shakespeare, stands higher in public esteem and affection than Jane Austen. This celebration is for those who have always loved her, and for those who would like to know more about the enigmatic and shadowy figure behind the popular image of bonnets, tea and gentility.

Jane Austen continues to fascinate us because she reveals human nature with all its delicious quirks and foibles. From the rumbustious delights of her juvenile works to the extraordinary explosion of vitality in her last and uncompleted novel, Sanditon, we take you on a colourful and revealing journey through the life and works of this most paradoxical and bewitching author. The performance will be accompanied with flute & piano accompaniment.

Robert Powell is a leading English stage and screen actor who has enjoyed success and critical acclaim for more than 40 years. He is best known for playing the title role in Franco Zeffirelli's groundbreaking TV mini-series 1977 Jesus of Nazareth. Other key roles have included fictional secret agent Richard Hannay in the 1978 film version of John Buchan's The Thirty Nine Steps and the title role in Ken Russell's Mahler. The breadth of his work is astonishing.

Actress Liza Goddard is best known for her work in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s when she made appearances in Doctor Who, Woof!, and The Brothers. For many years, she was also the female team leader on long-running quiz/panel show Give Us A Clue, and she appeared as Laurel Manasotti, who had an affair with Jimmy Mulville's character Donald, in the ITV sitcom "That's Love”. She later had a recurring role as Philippa Vale in "Bergerac". Her most recent recurring television role was alongside Dawn French and Catherine Tate in "Wild West". In 2007 she appeared in the "Midsomer Murders" episode "A Picture of Innocence", reuniting her with "Bergerac" star John Nettles.
