The Tutu Foundation UK was founded in 2007. It is built on the inspiration and knowledge of South African communities who sought reconciliation rather than revenge following the overthrow of Apartheid, through the southern African concept of Ubuntu. Ubuntu encourages us to recognise our common humanity, our connectedness and inter- dependence as fellow human beings. It emphasises what we have in common rather than our differences.

Desmond Tutu explains it like this: “We believe that a person is a person through another person, that my humanity is caught up, bound up, inextricably, with yours. When I dehumanize you, I inexorably dehumanize myself. "? The Tutu foundation UK was set up to use and promote this idea in the UK. Particularly with young people involved in gang violence. The foundation works with regional police forces, significant national institutions, corporates, in Northern Ireland helping to support the on-going peace process as well as local community and youth groups around the country. In each case we are helping them tackle bullying, prejudice and discrimination. We are working with them to increase respect and an appreciation of each other’s individual humanity and so empower them as individuals and groups to achieve more, to overcome disadvantage and increase equality, efficacy and efficiency.

Job Description

The Role

The Director will be responsible for creating the strategy and roll-out of the Foundation while working closely with the Board of Trustees. You will develop the programme of work, the offer, and they will be responsible for generating income to grow the work of the Foundation.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Lead strategy, innovation & growth

• Develop and implement the Foundation’s strategy
• Develop and promote a supporter scheme

Build partnerships and engagement

• Develop a collection of resources and introductions which will be useful to emerging and experienced leaders
• Promote the ideas, influence and impact of TFUK through an effective network

Fundraising

• Develop a broad network across corporates and individuals aligned to the purpose of the Foundation to sustain and grow through fundraising and other support
• Develop strong, mutually beneficial relationships with key stakeholders
• Assist with fundraising and philanthropic events to raise income and allow supporters to engage in the work of the charity

Communications

• Develop a communications strategy, framework and processes to maximise awareness
• Develop a cohesive and active social media presence

General

·       To develop procedures for the administration, financial management, and governance of the charity

• Develop and maintain excellent working relations with internal and external stakeholders at all levels
• Leverage and partner with other organisations to “get things done” when support is needed
• Represent the organisation as appropriate

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Experience of:

• Having led in the strategy, development or systems of a new programme or organisation
• Track record of developing an external network, identifying opportunities for fundraising and supporting organisational growth
• Building relationships and engagement with stakeholders at all levels

Skills and knowledge:

• Excellent verbal and written communicator; able to synthesise wide-ranging ideas and recommendations
• An ability to generate income
• Excellent organisation and project management skills

Personal attributes:

• Passionate about enabling social change and supporting young people to achieve the best from life
• A purpose-driven mindset and commitment to an ethical approach
• Proactive, self-starter with the energy and drive to build a new initiative from scratch and continue to identify and deliver areas for growth
• A flexible attitude
